Craftsmanship. The World Crafts Talk took place in the heart of Roser AG's large veneer warehouse in Birsfelden BL on Tuesday 28 May. The discussion panel took a look at veneer as a material.

The topic of "Cutting veneer by hand, the fillet of the tree" was the focus of the World Crafts Talk by Philipp Kuntze, CEO and founder of the Qn'C agency, on 28 May. In the informal round of talks, he asked Tobias Scherg, Managing Director of Roser, exciting questions about the production and special features of veneer as a material.

The fillet of the tree

At the beginning there were exciting insights into the company history of Roser AG, which was founded in 1912 by master carpenter Karl Friedrich Roser as a small joinery in Basel. With Christoph Roser, the fourth generation has now been represented in the management since the beginning of 2024. Tobias Scherg then gave an impressive demonstration of the steps and knowledge required to turn a tree from the forest into veneer for joinery work. The insights into the search for wood in the snow-covered forests of Europe, veneer production in the veneer factories and the realisation of objects all over the world amazed the numerous listeners. For Tobias Scherg, it is always important to find an individual story behind every veneer. This helps him from the search for wood to the sale and gives customers additional pleasure.
In terms of resources, veneer is one of the most sensible ways of utilising wood, according to Scherg. Up to 18, 000m2 of veneer can be obtained from a good eucalyptus tree.

Cultural heritage of craftsmanship

The World Crafts platform allows people to participate in the cultural heritage of craftsmanship and organises events, exhibitions and excursions. At these events, craftspeople are networked worldwide and interested people are informed about the cultural, social and economic importance of craftsmanship. The World Crafts platform is supported and financed by the World Crafts Friends association and the Qn'C Philipp Kuntze agency.
