Characteristic and wood color

The sapwood is about 5 - 7 cm wide, white to light brownish with a reddish-grey shimmer, unusable. The heartwood is reddish brown to violet with darker stripes, in quarter cut it appears banded. It is very decorative and reminds of walnut, with which it shows no other similarity. The wood has a beautiful silky shine. Grain variations are frequent. The wood is also very hard, very dense, heavy, has a uniform structure with good compressive and bending strength, is fairly elastic and impact resistant.
