Occurrence

The tree grows in the northeastern half of Canada and the USA, as well as in the south to Florida and Texas. In Europe it is partly cultivated.

Characteristic and wood color

Spint and heartwood are not sharply separated. The sapwood is narrow, rarely wider than 10 annual rings, yellowish to reddish. The heartwood is reddish brown and has a matt shine. It is firm and hard in younger trees, and somewhat softer in older trees. There is hardly any difference between early and late wood. The wood is very fine and straight grained.
