The tree is fast-growing and has essentially completed its growth by the age of 40. It reaches heights of over 30 m and a diameter of up to 150 cm. The shaft is usually short, as the branches begin to grow at a height of about 6 m, especially in the open air. The bark consists of thick-walled bast fibres. When young it is smooth, brownish-grey, later it tears into rectangular pieces and then resembles the English oak.

Occurrence
The elm grows in Central and Southern Europe and extends in the north to the southern part of Scandinavia and in the south to North Africa.
Characteristic and wood color
Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is narrow to medium wide and yellowish grey. The heartwood is grey to reddish brown, sometimes also dark brown and in any case darkens in air. The wood is very decorative and belongs to the most beautiful European wood species. The structure is long and mostly straight grained, twisted growth occurs, the texture is rough and even.
