"Searching for the perfect log"
On 30.11.2023, an article appeared in the Schweizer Schreinerzeitung about the origin of wood. Noah Gautschi (SSZ) accompanied Tobias Scherg, Managing Director of Roser AG, as he purchased logs in the forest during the winter months in search of the perfect logs for his company.
The search for new logs for veneer production is crucial, as good wood is essential for a successful business year. The challenges in veneer production are great, as fewer and fewer suitable logs are available.
Roser AG has been active in log purchasing for 111 years and has built up a large network. The search mainly covers Europe, but special projects also require a search in the USA or Brazil. Scherg emphasises the importance of transparency and legality in the timber trade and highlights common sense as the most important criterion for timber origin and sustainability. He also explains what he looks for when selecting logs and which types of wood are currently more difficult to obtain. Tobias Scherg emphasises that veneer is the most sustainable and resource-conserving way of using valuable wood.
