Detailed Description

A tree of very different shapes and sizes, on average up to 30 m high with diameters between 80 and 150 cm. Shaft up to 12 m knotless with strong plank roots. Trunk often irregularly shaped.

Occurrence

On the Malay Peninsula, the Moluccas and the Philippines, and in the southern part of China, planted in Burma.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood clearly separated. The sapwood is up to 12 mm wide and whitish to cream-coloured. The heartwood is different and changes trunk colour from light yellow to reddish brown or blood red, on average light reddish brown or carmine red, with black or dark stripes, shiny. Pores clearly visible and numerous. The burls, which are processed into veneer, are particularly prized.
