Detailed Description

A large tree with heights up to 30 m and a diameter between 100 and 180 cm, rarely more. The shaft has strong rootlets, is very straight and cylindrical in growth and knotless up to 20 m. The bark is up to 3 cm thick, very smooth, light brown outside, red inside. It is very firm and tough and is used by the natives to build canoes. With older trunks the bark excretes a yellowish to orange resin into the ground, which hardens and is collected by so-called copal ditches. This copal resin, also known as animi gum, is used medically and technically and is also said to have a higher tannin content.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is wide and almost white or grey. The heartwood is orange brown to violet when freshly cut and darkens quickly to reddish brown. It is usually very decorative with darker veins. The vessels have inclusions of calcium oxalate crystals. Annual rings are only visible with a magnifying glass. The structure of the wood is mostly straight grained, although low twist growth can occur. The texture is medium fine and not always even.
